A devoted wife, mother, and community servant, Maria's life was defined by her strong work ethic, her commitment to education, and her steadfast faith in God.
Maria attended school until the 6th grade before taking to the fields to help support the family. They traveled all over the country, from Texas to Illinois, and all the way out to California. She remembers this time fondly. She adored picking cotton and loved its distinct, fresh smell. She loved racing her dad down the row to see who could pick the cotten the fastest.
Her life changed when her soon to be husband returned from the military and found her working in a field. She was very nervous about getting married on her wedding day, and kept her groom waiting by telling her mother that she had to finish cleaning the kitchen. She remembers this as the only time her mother was very angry with her.
Maria started her career outside of the fields as a presser in a laundromat. She took great pride in her work and was often called "the fastest presser in the west." While working at the cleaners, she studied nights to obtain her GED and eventually a Teacher's Aide Certificate. She started working with Ms. Mock in the Snyder school district and was a dedicated employee for 32 years, retiring in May of 2000.
Maria's greatest joy and pride was her service to God and the community. A devout parishioner, her most cherished contributions were made in association with the Catholic Diocese of Lubbock and Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Snyder. She served as a Cursilliasta and Guadalupana. She also taught catechism classes alongside her husband.
She was blessed to enjoy 26 years of retirement, spending her time with her loving family.
