Nelva Ruth Herring Jones passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 12, 2026 in Snyder, Texas, at the age of 91, after a lengthy illness. She has finally received her restoration and reward.
The funeral will be held Monday, May 18, at 37th Street Church of Christ in Snyder, TX, at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Fluvanna Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Bell-Cypert-Seale Sunday the 17th, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
She was born at home on July 17, 1934 in Dawson Co., Texas, to Willie Price Herring and Jimmie Esther Watson. She attended Mt. Olive School before moving with her family to a farm in Dermott, Texas. She graduated from Fluvanna High School in 1952, one of a class of 3. She married Don Allen Jones on September 6,1952 in Snyder, Tx. After living in Georgia while Don was in the Army, she stayed with her parents while he served in Germany, returning to continue their married life, farming and ranching in Borden and Scurry County, where they raised 3 children . They celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary before Don passed away due to cancer in 2012.
Nelva was very active in the community and in every life she touched. She loved to cook, feed anyone that Don invited to dinner, pick and preserve fruits and vegetables, make sun tea and pickles, and keep a warm and welcoming house. She baked her famous sourdough bread for every fundraiser, neighbor, or sick friend. She was famous for her traveling pound cakes and spirit cookies at Christmas. She was a moving force in the Church of Christ in Fluvanna until the doors closed, and then the Church of Christ in Gail, teaching Sunday School, women’s classes, Bible School, and taking care of family, friends, and strangers. She was a certified EMT.
She was proceeded in death by her parents, her husband Don A., her brother Ray Herring, her sister Sue Stephens, her son Max S. Jones, and her faithful friend Haydog.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law Jane Jones of Borden County, her daughter Susan Donelle Hensley (Randy) of Borden County, and daughter Carla Ann Sandusky (Grant) of Roscoe. Grandchildren include Cody Cox (Lacee), Carey Bridgeman (Wade), Sky Jones (Tara), Rana Jameson (Bradley), Rebekah Ratliff (Jeff), Micah Lust (Cameron), John Hensley (Meagan), Sarah Watson (Garrett), Callie Bell (Kody), 20 great-grandchildren (2 on the way), and 1 great-great grandchild.
